Each of these hymns except Liebster Jesu and Marion has an optional descant allowing it to be performed with equal success as either a brass quartet or a quintet. They are meant to be used as accompaniments for congregational singing. The descant can be omitted until the last verse, letting the trumpeters spell each other on the tune until time for the descant.
